I have leg cramps every night. Will compression socks help? If so, how much compression do I need?

Leg cramps can be due to many factors. You should first see a vein specialist for a venous evaluation. Also, certain medications can cause this. Once the reason for the cramps is determined, then the appropriate treatment can be suggested. Compression hose may or may not help and, if used, 20 to 30 mmHg compression is indicated.

Yes, graded compression socks help. As for how much compression you need, that depends on why you are using them. Talk to your physician about this. Or, if you are seeing a vein specialist, seek advice from him or her regarding this.

Provided that you have venous insufficiency and/or varicose veins causing the leg cramping, leg elevation on a pillow while in bed will help, as will compression stockings (20-30 mm Hg). I also recommend targeted leg exercises during the day.

My vascular surgeon did an ultrasound and prescribed endovenous laser ablation. She also suggested that I wear compression stockings after the procedure. However, due to severe psoriasis and eczema on my feet, I cannot wear full-coverage stockings that cover them. They must always be in wet dressings, but cannot be fully covered. Would footless compression stockings be just as effective as full-coverage hose following the procedure?
